While on the surface these processes seem whole different, they are actually different aspects of the same thing. Discovered in the unknowable past by the accomplished mage Drolan, Alchemy exists as a special formula to "warp" the rules of regular chemistry. All alchemy is done through this formula, which has the unique property of being able to reconstitute natural processes in a way that always yields success, while most attempts to modify or improve the formula result in random chance success, or just repeated and destructive effects.
Droland's formula, while genius, is completely alien to a mortal mind. A complex grouping of magical equations and chemical properties mesh in a way so as to allow an adequate magical circuit to flow throughout the affected substance. While many spells can make an object temporarily into another, this alchemy formula allows for the permanent restructuring of a substance on a molecular level. It will not revert to its earlier form, as for all significant purposes the alchemy results have "always been."
Alchemy should not be confused with "homeopathy." While the two seem to stem from similar thoughts and patterns, homeopathy lacks the magical components needed for it to actually function. Alchemy effects tend to follow a pattern that "Makes sense." in some strange manner. Water into alcohol and lead into gold remain as prime examples, with alcohol having the same physical properties as water, but with the opposite effect on those that need to consume water. Lead into gold is easy, because pure metals function in nearly identical manners with the alchemical formula; although bronze and silver are often made accidentally.
For the young magi interested in cheap and durable equipment suitable for (al)chemical use, you will want to find an expert glass blower to make your retort and alembic to your exacting specifications. This is best done in the summer due to the cheaper cost of silica. If you're a ranking wagemage with a decent salary, getting your equipment and other items made out of Tektites (especially the rare Moldavite) allows for slow degrading and accurate magical effects, as well as the ability to sustain a constant, definitive temperature.
In other magical news, our attempts to classify smokepowder as an alchemical substance have exceeded expectations. Very few of those lacking in knowledge arcane seem willing to be near the stuff. Attempts to dispose of the substance should be our first priority; we all know what sort of threat a peasantry armed with such simple yet destructive weapons could cause, especially to our lower ranks.
